When Bill Liu (OM 2016) and Ben Hoskins (OM 2017) moved to the United States to pursue new opportunities in education and careers, they recognised the challenges of building professional and personal networks in a new country. They turned to the Old Melburnians community, seeing it as an ideal way to stay connected, build meaningful relationships, and establish a sense of belonging in their new home.
As the newly appointed Old Melburnian USA Branch Ambassadors, Bill and Ben are focused on creating a supportive network for Old Melburnians across the US and Canada. Supported by The Old Melburnians Council and the School, their goal is to connect Old Melburnians living or studying in the US, offering a sense of community for those starting out in a new country.
The main focus of the Branch is currently in New York, with plans to hold regular gatherings on the West Coast in the future.
“I always had a sense that there were many Old Melburnians doing incredible things here in the US, but that it was difficult to work out who they were or what they were up to,” says Bill. “Getting involved with the US Branch was my way to connect – and reconnect – with other Old Melburnians and to help me build a supportive network that will also assist others as they make the same move”.
“Navigating the US on your own can be difficult, so our hope is that the USA Branch will be a place for Old Melburnians who have recently made the move, to find support and mentorship as they start their journey,” Ben explains.
In July this year, Bill and Ben hosted a ‘New York Branch Summer Drinks’ event – a great success, providing a relaxed setting for networking and sharing experiences.
In addition to in-person events, Bill and Ben have created a LinkedIn group for Old Melburnians based in the US and Canada to stay connected, share information, and learn about upcoming events.
Bill and Ben’s efforts are creating a lasting impact. “These events are more than just trading business cards, they’re about building deeper connections,” Ben explains. “Whether it’s helping someone find a job or simply reconnecting with old friends, it’s a reminder that our Old Melburnian community extends far beyond Melbourne.”
