Spotlight on the Old Melburnian Bowls Club

The Old Melburnian Bowls Club is just one of the great ways for Old Melburnians to connect with others who have similar interests.

What are the benefits of joining the Old Melburnian Bowls Club?

The Old Melburnian Bowls Club isn’t just about playing a sport; it’s about being part of a community that values tradition, friendship, and healthy competition. Whether you’re looking to stay active, meet new people, or simply enjoy a new hobby, the Old Melburnian Bowls Club offers a welcoming and supportive environment for all.

Members of the club regularly gather for social matches. These gatherings often include refreshments and plenty of opportunities to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Are there competitive matches against other clubs?

The club is essentially a social group, primarily playing against other members.

However, there are a couple of opportunities to compete against other clubs. The annual Bluestone Challenge is a highlight on the bowls calendar, where APS alumni associated teams play against each other for the Bluestone Cup.

Who can join?

Lawn bowls is often perceived as a game for older generations, but the reality is that it’s a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. “It’s a game for everybody. It is a game that young people play,” says club President Barry Fleming (OM 1958).

The club is always open to welcoming new players, whether an Old Melburnian, relative or friend of an Old Melburnian, or anyone with an interest in the game. The club is also accessible for people with mobility issues.

Coach and coordinator Rob Nethercote (OM 1964) is offering lessons to anyone interested in bowls, regardless of their skill level. “We had someone new recently. He had about 20 minutes of practice then was ready to play a game.”

Calling new members

As the Lawn Bowls season is about to get underway, the Club is calling out for new members to join.

New members will be warmly welcomed, with an introduction to the Club, and the offer of free coaching.

When do you meet?

The Old Melburnian Bowls Club currently meets on Wednesdays, typically twice a month from 11am to 2pm. These meetings typically involve social matches and refreshments.

Most matches take place at MCC Bowls Section – Swinburne Avenue or MCC Bowls Section – Glen Street, both located in Hawthorn.

The season runs from the start of September to the end of March.

What costs are involved?

The Old Melburnian Bowls Club membership costs only $20 per year, and when the Club meets, members have the option to eat lunch at the club for $15 per person. There is 2-hour free parking at the club and an optional Old Melburnian branded uniform that can be purchased.
