For more than 40 years, the Melburnia Club has been a central pillar of Melbourne Grammar School’s rowing community.
Founded in 1981, the Club now consists of more than 850 members, including past rowers, families, staff and supporters. These members share in a commitment to preserve lifelong connections while supporting the School’s rowing program.
Outgoing President John Michelmore (OM 1979) has been closely involved with the Club since its early days. He has witnessed the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Head of the River, and has watched Old Melburnians excel on the world stage, from Olympians to members of victorious King’s Cup crews.
“The Melburnia Club is here to support Melbourne Grammar rowing. We keep members up to date with what is happening with the current school program,” he said.
“Rowing, no matter how short a period you are involved, has an impact on your life.”
For John, the friendships and shared experiences have been a real highlight of his time as President.
“Seeing a new group of Year 12 rowers put on the Melburnia tie at the Head of the River Dinner each year is always a thrill,” he reflected.
“No other sport has such a long-term bond with your teammates.”
Incoming President Stephen Blakeney (OM 2009) shares John’s passion and is eager to build on the strong foundations.
“Whether you rowed 1st VIII or 5th VIII, 50 years ago or two, you immediately share an understanding of what it means to have rowed for Melbourne Grammar,” he said.
Looking ahead, Stephen is excited about new initiatives, including the launch of the Melburnia Caps and the inaugural Melburnia Dinner.
“We want to make sure the Club provides a meaningful community for rowing Old Melburnians, and creates opportunities for young members to stay engaged after they leave the shed,” he explained.
John is equally assured that the Club is in good hands.
“Stephen has the passion and commitment to take the Club to a new level,” he said.
As always, the Melburnia Club carries forward its commitment to Melbourne Grammar rowing, strengthened by the bonds it has created over decades.
The inaugural Melburnia Dinner will be held on Friday 29 August 2025 in the Luxton Dining Hall at Melbourne Grammar School.
This special dinner is a chance to connect generations of Old Melburnian rowers, celebrate the Melburnia Club’s history and look toward the exciting future of rowing at Melbourne Grammar School.
Join us for a three-course dinner, as we launch the new Melburnia Caps, celebrate the Anniversary Crews and hear from special guests throughout the night.
