Basquait Mixed Media

Artists: Year 5 students, 2020
Medium: Various

Year 5 students produced mixed media collages and drawings inspired by the street art of Jean-Michel Basquiat for this exhibition.

They investigated societal perspectives communicated through Basquiat’s art and used symbols, lines, colours and patterns to communicate ideas and opinions important to them.

In the Visual Arts and Media Arts tasks, students explored the techniques of collage, painting and drawing, with emphasis on their use of positive and negative space and layering to create a balanced composition.

The artwork in this exhibition was produced during a period of off-campus learning.

The artistic process

Here, three student artists explain the thought and creative processes they used to develop their artwork.

“I used positive space as my horse and negative space is the pink and blue. This represents animal cruelty and how people don’t look after their animals properly. The horse has a collar on and that suggests that it isn’t feeling good.”

Arabella

“My sketch is of a rapper who has passed away, sadly. The words are his albums. The squiggly lines are to show that he is a calm person and the short sharp lines are to show the little times that he is feeling negative, although he is quite a positive person.”

Chili

“… positive space was in the mind because he was getting bullied about his skin. All the shapes and lines are the speech bubbles that the bullies where saying to him.”
