Shoe Observational Drawing and Construction

Artists: Year 4 students, 2020
Medium: Various

Year 4 students engaged in observational drawing techniques to produce accurate representations of a variety of shoes. They produced original artworks and enhanced the illusion of 3D form through their application of colour and tone; with consideration of value, light and shade.

The students designed and constructed a shoe artwork using a variety of found and recycled media such as papers, card, string, ribbon and fabric. They explored the processes of weaving, attaching, wrapping, and threading their chosen materials.

The artwork in this exhibition was produced during a period of off-campus learning.

The artistic process

Here, eleven student artists explain the thought and creative processes they used to develop their artworks.

“For my artwork I used the colours yellow, red, orange, purple, blue and green to make the shoe happy and bright. I made the shoe for the beach or a warm summer day.”

Annabelle

“I used retro colours to present an old fashion kind of style… I also want to present the hand-made shoe industry passed on from generation to generation’s feelings.”

Annie

“I put a lot of detail in my work. I focused on shape … [and] got every little detail.”

Carla

“The colour and texture I tried to go for are the ones that show the lines and outside of the shoe.”

Francesca

“I used shadow to show the negative space and colour to show positive.”

Hugo

“I used space to show where a foot would go if it was a real shoe.”

Jonathan

“This is a shoe we did in art. I focused on shading and colour. In my opinion, I think this is my best drawing ever”

Lindsay

“The art element I used was line because I wanted it to look very sunny and rainy at the same time… There were pink diamonds on it because it was a luxury sandal and black sort of wire around it to make it look jazzy / antique.”

Miller K

“I printed out a design to put over the cardboard to make it match the straps. I put two stickers on the front saying snacks and chill, which I thought was funny. ”

Miller S

“Thanks for the task, I really enjoyed it. I used bold black lines around the shapes on my shoe so you can focus on the shapes and the lines, instead of them disappearing into the shoe.”

Sadie

“I used the elements of colour, shape and line. I named my shoe ‘the neon master’ and added some new colours”
