The evolution of Grammar News

Melbourne Grammar School is defined by its people, and Grammar News tells their stories. Not all of them – but what we hope is a mix that reflects the vibrant, inclusive and ‘focus on excellence’ culture of the School.

Now translated to a digital site which forms the nexus for all Grammar News stories, articles are also assimilated into periodic digests and directly distributed to School community members.

Commencing in 2020, digital digests of Grammar News stories are currently published four times per year – at the end of each Term – and these editions of Grammar News are emailed to all Old Melburnians, parents of prospective, current and recent students, staff and other friends of the School for whom we have current contact details.

Some of these stories are also replicated in a print magazine which is published twice a year – at the end of Terms II and IV – and has a limited distribution.

But it wasn’t always this way. Grammar News had humble beginnings.

The first edition of Grammar News was published in 1977. Named Grammar Newsletter, it was a modest document of six pages and included short articles about the tour of Papua New Guinea and how the School “planned to keep costs down”.  It announced the introduction of the Grammar Foundation, changes to the Articles of the Old Melburnians relating to Life membership and establishment of the name ‘Friends of Grammar’ for the group previously known as Grammar Mothers. Seventy words were dedicated to the 1976 HSC results.

Initially published three times each year, in line with the then three term school year*, the document remained between four to eight pages until the 1990s with articles gradually changing in nature over that time. With the increase in page numbers came an increase in the content dedicated to Old Melburnian news.

There was a major change in 1991 when limited use of colour was introduced. The publication became full colour in 2002.

In 2006, an updated design was launched and, at that time the name changed to now familiar Grammar News.

And so we reach today. Technology enables the School to provide the School community with more news, more often, in a more accessible form for many.

We hope you enjoy this new approach to Grammar News.

*The school year changed to four terms in 1987.
